How To Play?

BAZAR BLOT

Belote is intended for 4 players. Let’s assign the players with the letters A, B, C and D. At the beginning of the game the players are divided into pairs and are arranged in a circular shape so that the paired players are not seated next to each other. E.g. A and B, as well as C and D are co-players (team mates), and they are seated clockwise in the following sequence – A, B, C and D.

The cards 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A of all kinds participate in the game. At the beginning of each round one of the players distributes the cards (each player receives 8 cards) and the players decide which suit will be the trump card (you can find how it can be done – below, from now on all the cards different from the trump card, will be called simple cards). It can be also decided to play without a trump card (it is called height). Then, the player sitting next to the distributor (saying next here and afterwards we mean next hour, clockwise) makes a move putting one of their cards. Then, the next player makes a move, then the next two. The player who has put the “strongest” card (find information about the strength of the cards below) the next move starts, and the quartet of the given cards is added to the “stock” of the two co-players (at the beginning the stocks of both teams are empty). This way, the round continues 8 times, until the players’ cards are gone. At the end of the round, depending on the card stocks collected by the teams, they collect points. The team collecting 301 points first, wins.

Strengths of cards in a descending order:

Simple cards: A, 10, K, Q, J, 9, 8, 7

Trump cards: J, 9, A, 10, K, Q, 8, 7:

Any trump card is stronger than any simple card.

The one making the move has a right to put any of the cards. The other players should make moves in the following way:

●      If the player making the move has put a simple card and they have a card of the same suit, they should put one of their cards of the given suit.

●      If the player starting the move has put a card and they don't have a card of that suit, but have such a trump card stronger than all the cards put before their moves, they should put such a trump card (putting such a trump card is called beating). An exception is the case when the co-player has already made a move and the co-player's card is the strongest among the cards put before their cards. In this case it is possible not to beat and put any card. If they don't have such a trump card, they can put any card.

●      If the one making the move has put a trump card and they have a one stronger than all the cards put before, they should put such a trump card. If they don't have such a trump card but has other ones, they should put any trump card. If the player doesn't have any trump cards at all, they should put any trump card.

At the end of the round the teams' card stocks are calculated. Each card in the stock brings points. Simple cards bring the following points:

●      A – 11,

●      10 – 10,

●      K – 4,

●      Q – 3,

●      J – 2,

●      7, 8, 9 don't bring points.

Trump J brings 20 points, 9 brings 14 points. The remaining trump cards in this case do not differ from the simple cards. In case of height A costs 19 points. In all cases the sum value of the cards equals 152. The team receiving the last four cards receives 10 additional points. If one of the teams receives all the cards with no exception, they say, the team did kaput: Kaput brings not 162, but 250 points.

Now let’s turn to the process of determining the trump card. The players has a right to “speak” consecutively. The player can say “x pcs of suits”. Here, x is a number, and the suit- clubs, diamonds, spades, hearts or height. This means the following: “if the suit is a trump card, we will take not less than 10x with the card”. E.g. if the player says “12 of hearts”, this means that their co-player should take not less than 120 points with the card. However, some card combinations bring additional points, based on which the players can announce bigger numbers. E.g. if the player says “12 of hearts” and their team has 2 additional points, they should take not less than 100 points with the given card. If the team doesn’t receive the said amount, they say he has lost. Additional points are brought by the following card combinations:

●      Trump card – 3 consecutive cards of the same suit (where the word consecutive should be understood in the form accepted in the card games - 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A) 2 points:

●      50 – 4 consecutive cards of the same suit, 5 points.

●      100 – 5 consecutive cards of the same suit, 10 points.

●      4 of a kind – the same card of all 4 suits (except for 7), depending on the cards, 4 of a kind brings different points:

○      J – 20 points,

○      9 - 14 points (if the game is without a trump card, then 10 points),

○      K,  Q, 10 – 10 points,

○      A – 10 points (if the game is without a trump card, 19 points),

○      8doesn’t bring points, but later we will see, what it is capable of.

●      If the player has the Q and K cards of the trump cards simultaneously, that also brings 2 points (it is called beloterebelote)

The player can simultaneously have several of the above mentioned combinations. However, they all are calculated only in case they do not cross each other. E.g. the quartet {7 of hearts, 8 of hearts, 9 of hearts, 10 of hearts} contains one 50, two tierce, however only one of them can be calculated, and { 8 of hearts, 9 of hearts, 10 of hearts, 10 of clubs, J of clubs, Q of clubs}, the cards contain 2 tierces not crossing each other, and both of them can be calculated. Beloterebelote is not connected to the other combinations and brings 2 points no matter what. All the rules referring to the combinations mentioned afterwards will not refer to beloterebelote.

If the player has any combination, they should say about that before making the first move. And to persuade the other players that they really have the given combination, they should show it to the other players before making the second move. It can happen, that one of the combination cards has already been put during the first move, in this case the remaining combination cards should be shown.

If both of the team cards have combinations, the ones of only one team can be calculated. The combinations of the player (and the co-player) that are “stronger” are only calculated. Combination strengths in a descending order: 4 of a kind, 100, 50, tierce. However, it can happen (and often happens) that two opponents have tierce at the same time (or another combination). Let’s bring the concept of height: in case of 4 of a kind height is the card, of which the player has 4 of a kind (e.g. {9 of spades, 9 of diamonds, 9 of clubs, 9 of hearts} the combination height is 9), and in other cases the highest card in the combination.

E.g. {9 of hearts, 10 of hearts, J of hearts} combination height is J. In case of 4 of a kind the 4 cards, that is ahead in the following row is stronger: 8, J, 9, A, 10, K, Q (in fact, 8s don’t bring points but can neutralize all the combinations of the opponent). And in case of other combinations, the heights are standard: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9.

If the heights of both opponents’ combinations are the same, the one that is from a trump card will pass. If none of them is from a tramp card, the one who has an opportunity to show their combination will pass. If the player forgets to show their combination, the opponents have an opportunity to show theirs every next time.

If the player says higher than 25, they can mention they are doing kaput. In this case, even if they take the mentioned amount, but don’t do kaput, they also lose. If any of the teams says that they do kaput with any trump card, the other team doesn’t have right to say a trump card without kaput.

If the player thinks that the opponents can’t take the amount they said, they can go on a risk and do doubling. In case the opponents actually lose, they will earn more points. However, if the opponents take the amount they mentioned, the latter will gain more points. If in case of doubling, the player thinks they will take the amount they mentioned, they also can go on a risk- re-double and increase potential points.

And finally, the points are calculated the following way: e.g. A and C have said x amount. of any trump card, but have taken y amount. If x > y, they haven’t lost, and earn x + y points (if there was no doubling), and B and D earn points taken with that trump card (here, naturally, the sum of taken cards should be divided by 10). And if A and C have lost, they don’t receive points, and B and D earn x + 16 + z points, where z are the additional points of the teams. In case of doubling the losing team doesn’t earn points (in case of doubling and re-doubling, if the team doubles but makes a mistake, they lose), and the other team earns 2 x + 16 + z points. In case of re-doubling x should be multiplied not by 2, but by 4.
